BUCKHANNON -- An accident on Route 20 in Upshur County sent two people to the hospital Monday.

It happened on Monday, Feb. 1 at about 7:40 a. m.

Matthew S. Johnston, 16, of Buckhannon was driving south toward Buckhannon Upshur High School in his hardtop Jeep, when he crossed the center line, according to Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller.

Johnston struck a pickup truck, which Jonathon Keith Dowell, 59, of Buckhannon was driving, near the Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, Miller said.

The vehicles collided nearly head-on, stated Miller, and Johnston was partially ejected. Miller does not think Johnston was wearing a seat belt.

Both drivers were flown via helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, according to Miller.

Johnston was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, and Dowell was in serious condition, Miller said.

The accident is still under investigation.

The Buckhannon Fire Department, Warren District Volunteer Fire Department, and Upshur County EMS also responded to the crash.

As of this morning the family is reporting that Matthew will be removed from life support and allowed to pass today.

They were not receiving any visitors to allow his mother and father to spend his last moments with them. When he passes his organs are being donated to CORE, it was his wish to be an organ donar.

There is no breathing on his own. He received a severe head trauma that has left him with 0% brain activity. The only think keeping him alive are the machines. He is completely brain dead.

A few years ago my fiancee had been in a wreck and was in SICU in morgantown for 2 weeks,we thought he was going to die.He was swollen from head to toe and hooked up to several machines,we prayed and prayed and one day he stood up on broken legs and removed his tubes and is still with us today....so there is hope for Matt and we all really need to keep praying for him and his family.

Matt IS still alive. I know some of his family personally and as of yesterday 2/3/10 my nephew went to visit him in the hospital. He's in a coma, but his heart rate is good & the swelling in his body is going down! There are alot of people sending up prayers for Matt and his family right now. He has alot of wonderful supporters. I really wish people would stop spreading rumors and get their facts straight before opening their mouths. It's only hurting the friends and family. Keep praying for him - he needs all the prayers he can get.

Matthew is being kept on life support until his organs can be harvested by CORE. He is medically brain dead and will be taken off the machines once they have harvested the organs he will be donating.

My prayers go out to Johnston family and those affected by this. But with each tragedy is a new opportunity for God to shine his light. Hopefully this will teach drives to be more careful, espeacially younger ones. May his soul rest in peace but let the memories live on threw those who knew him, and loved him.

God Bless!!

Matt you and your family is in my prayers.

I hope everyone affected by, especially his high school friends, remembers what it is like to tragically loose a loved one. As a firefighter I see the results of carelessness on a daily basis.

I hope this sends a message not only to our youth but our adults as well. Take the time to buckle, hang up the cell phone, and slow down! I can not stress those three things any more. A majority of injuries and death can be prevented if people would do all or even just one of those things.

I challenge people to strive to become safer drivers and prevent this from happening again. If not for yourself, do it for your loved ones.
