CHARLESTON --  A Monongalia County delegate has pleaded guilty to Driving Under the Influence in Charleston.

According to court records, Delegate Alex Shook, D-Monongalia, pleaded guilty to non-aggravated DUI in Kanawha County Magistrate Court Tuesday and was fined $100 and will have to pay court costs.

Charleston Police arrested Shook Jan. 27 after he was driving the wrong way down Virginia Street. His blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, according to police.

I know a person that got caught for a DUI in Randolph co. that they took his license he lost his job. I just think its unfair that other people that are lawyers get off with just a fine or a slap on the hand and go do it again. Everyone makes mistakes but being a lawyer they know better IT'S THE LAW.

Shouldn't we be mad at the Magistrate that gave him the reduced charges?

Do we all have the facts were we in the court room or are we just going by what we hear and not what we honestly know. See the thing is the news as well as news paper companies dont always get all the facts passed down to them either. So they have to go by what they have been told. So unless we are there to know for ourselves than we have no right to judge. Goes back to believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear... THANK YOU

Normal people would lose their license for 30-45 days, pay a fine higher fine, pay court costs, pay for school at a mental health facility, have to attend AA sessions, pay a reinstatement fee for your license, and pay about $2,000 to $5,000 for an attorney to represent them in court. This is so not fair. If anyone gets a DUI in the future, state the case law from this case in your hearing and demand equal treatment. And if you do not get, file a civil rights lawsuit.

Hey compassion,

I understand that we are all humans, and make mistakes, but I hardly consider this to be a mere mistake. What if he had hit someone else head-on in his drunken stupor? I have made plenty of mistakes, but none of them have included being STUPID enough to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. It doesn't take a genius, but I am forgetting that he is not a genius, but a lawyer!

Well, I have to agree with the majority on this one. Lawmakers that break the law should be held to the exact same standard as everyone else...justice SHOULD BE blind. The reality of this situation is, however, that our society in general condones lighter sentences for the wealthy, powerful and famous (or infamous as it may be). If the majority finds this type of "justice" unfair, unlawful or just plain insulting, there is a way to change it...vote for people who hold themselves to a "higher standard". Encourage honest people to run for office, people who observe the laws. Research who you choose to vote for, not by the free gifts they hand out, but by the content of their character.

Until the time that an "honest" politician can succeed, this is what we are doomed to tolerate.

A friend of ours died when a drunk driver hit him. We are very sensitive to this subject. What a great example of our legal system. A lawyer gets a DUI and all is forgiven. Wow! Are our state lawmakers proud of this? For goodness sake, somebody take a stand. I don't care if you want to abuse your body with alcohol and I don't know if they teach this at law school, but here is the lesson for the day--CALL A CAB!!!

You know the real crime is that he is paid with tax payers money, So we the tax payers are paying for the fine and court costs. They should make him get a job as walmart greeter to pay his fines and court costs, wearing a sign saying I drive drunk.

I have been keeping up with this story and I am sure that not all of the facts have been reported to the public. I don't know about anyone else, but I have dealt with a drunk driving charge in my immediate family. A family member was charged with first offense DUI and blew a .09, which is .01 above the legal limit. He was required to spend a mandatory 24 hours in jail, attend classes and lost his license for 3 months. I am not sure how much in fines he had to pay, but there were some assessed to him because of his crime. Now, I am not sure, other than the $100 fine that was reported, what else Mr. Shook has to do to serve his time, but I agree with most of you that he was not treated like others who have commited the same crime. I also don't believe that WV is tough enough on DUI offenders.

just wondering is the this the same man who is an attorney in Morgantown? If so, maybe he won't get the clients he has in the past. Especially since he is an attorney that handles wrongful death etc... kind of ironic to put yourself in that situation when those are the kinds of cases you go after....

What's the big deal here? None of us would have gotten any worse of a punishment. Hell, if we kill somebody while drunk driving the maximum sentance is only 2 years in prison.....cut down to one year with good behavior. According to our lawmakers drunk driving is a complete joke.

When I saw that he only got the one hundred dollar fine and the story ended there I couldn't believe it. I have read all the comments and I am surprised that there are some who don't see anything wrong with this picture. I have to agree with Fed Up and all the others who can clearly see that he was given special treatment and a mere smack on the hand over this ordeal that if it had been any one of "general population" would have gotten the suspended license, a night in jail, and at least $500.00 fine by the time court costs and all the other fees are added on.

Compassion knows what he's talking about. The rest of you are ignorant about the law. Try to learn and pay attention before spouting off. Oh, for example. Shook already announced last year that he was not seeking reelection. Grind your axe against some other politician.

I'm sick of hearing people say this was a "mistake" and we all make "mistakes". I do make mistakes, sure, but drinking and driving isn't one of them. This guy is nothing more than a criminal and should be treated like one.

Obviously NONE of you listen to the news. He did plead guilty, paid his fine and court costs. He was charged with aggravated dui by the DMV will lose drivers license for 45 days, attend 6 weeks of dui courses and have a blow and go installed in his car. You people need to GET YOUR FACTS straight before you go bashing someone. I truly hope none of you EVER have to go through something like this. We all are human and make mistakes.

I am sure if that was me in the same shoes it would have been charged as Aggravated DUI. I would have also been required to go to DUI classes with the local community mental health center. There is an obvious double standard here. It would only make sense that an attorney and an elected public official would be held to a HIGHER standard?

And he gets off with a slap on the wrist, business as usual in WV.

If that would have been one of us "peasants" we would have been thrown in jail, had our license suspended and been in the hole $500.

This is a slap in the face to all WV citizens. Not even a “go to class” requirement. I am fed-up with politics as usual. The "Tea Party" is looking better every day and this kind of action make it even more appealing. To add insult to injury, my money is on the fact that some political lobbyist paid the tab for his night-out. I'm sure there will be a very heartfelt and sincere public apology forth coming. Yea Right.

I can’t believe this charge was bargained down to Non-aggravated DUI. At twice the legal limit it should have been an Aggravated DUI charge. One set of rules for the rich and powerful; another set of rules for the rest of us. If this guy actually tries to run for reelection, I hope no one will vote for him. I know I won’t.
