Emergency crews are responding almost constantly to reports of power lines and trees falling across roadways in our area, say 911 Call Centers.

These roads are reported to be completely closed by the respective county call centers:

Interstate 79 in Marion County, from Exit 132 to the Monongalia County Line, both directions
Route 857
Route 20
Route 19
Route 7
Meadowbrook Road, Bridgeport
Scott's Run, Morgantown
Fairchance Road, Morgantown
University Town Centre Drive, Morgantown (the entire center is closed until further notice)
Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown

Gov. Joe Manchin issued a State of Emergency early Friday, urging motorists to stay off the roads.

hey, don't forget the people in the ER's;;;;;and by the way, i always thought that State of Emergency meant that you were to stay off the roads unless you were an essential employee of a hospital or emergency services.....at one time you were actually given a ticket if you were on the roads and were not with emergency services....

Does anyone know what the law says about this topic? Or does anyone know where I could look to find a law about this topic. Opinions do not count when it comes down to someone being fired for an unjust cause.

Pedro, That's bulls chit. EMS workers Police and Hospital staff...do not need the restaurants to be open for them...most EMS workers have food on site because they don't have a set time to eat because they have to go out and help people that are STUPID enough to drive in this weather. As for hospital staff they also eat on site...ALL hospitals have food services. Now tell me Pedro how often do you see the police in a restaurant? All hard working EMS workers keep food on site. God bless them for the jobs they do and I bet they wish they had a fools free time to kick back and have some Cracker Barrel chow. Pedro...I have a great idea...how about you drop off some can goods, chips, cookies,,,or fixings for food to Police & EMS crews?

No, restaurants don't need to be opened for police, medical workers or anyone else. They can pack their lunch like many other people with jobs do. Besides, if the restaurants are closed, that's less people on the road that they might need to go rescue.

Restaurants need to be open. There are some people who must work regardless of snow emergencies, etc. Police, nurses, firemen, the guy who runs the snow plow, doctors etc are needed all the time. If they have to work they need to eat so at least some restaurants need to be open to serve them. The politicians and strippers can stay at home with no ill effects to society but some people really do need to be out.

I think in a State of Emergency, the stores, restaurants, and malls should be forced to be closed...Stupid is as stupid does if you open they will come...I can't think of one store or restaurant that would be worth the risk of dying or killing someone on the roads. I also think it's stupid for people to be on the roads with 4 wheelers and snow mobiles ....that's so wacked up.

For those mall employees that fear the loss of their job because You deem it unsafe to travel to work for any reason are just not working for the right company. You need to find a company that shares your safety values. I work at the mall and I work for a company that still values the safety of their employees. I suggest you look for another source of employment.

Every manager that I know (I have three jobs) expects their employees to come in to work regardless of weather, even if they themselves can't get out of their driveway. Why do they think I can make it in my compact pickup when they can't make it in their big 4x4 SUVs? One of my jobs is at a day care. We have to come in on snow days even though there will be no customers to serve, or be fired for "abandoning our jobs."

Brian, I know for a fact that some people would be fired for not showing up for work. As for the scary snow, I have been in West Virginia my ENTIRE life, and yes, I do stay at home, but also in a STATE OF EMERGENCY, everyone should stay at home and non-essential businesses should have to be closed. It is a STATE OF EMERGENCY----- not a joyride for some people. State of Emergency--- leave the roads open for emergency vehicles only- not for people just wanting to walk the mall, or go out to eat.

Unlike s.c. West Virginia is not so totalitarian. So since your all big boys and girls and allowed to make your own decisions, if you don't like the scary snow, stay home! Do you really believe that you you wouldn't have a greivance with the state labor board if you were fired for not going to work during a state of emergency? Grow up and make your own decisions!

In South Carolina, when the governor has declared a "state of emergency" it is taken very seriously. I remember one time in particular when there was a "state of emergency" due to a hurricane and although it had clearly missed the island that I lived on, businesses were not allowed to be open and would be fined if they did. In addition, the National Guard was enforcing that everyone stay home by patroling the beach by foot. Even though it was a beautiful, sunny day, there still was a "state of emergency" in which everyone was expected to adhere to. I strongly believe that WV government must set an example for the state and enforce the measures that are set in place to keep citizens safe. During the President's Day Blizzard several years back, even state employees had to report to work during a "state of emergency" or were forced to use vacation/annual leave. How can the governor or his staff be expected to be taken seriously when they themselves are not adhering to their "official" advice and are putting their employees in harm's way?

Yes, buckwheat, I agree. I think in a State of Emergency, the stores, restaurants, and malls should be forced to be closed. Restaurants and Malls do not have to be open. Leave the roads for emergency personnell only. It is a shame that you have to risk your life in order to have a job. That's not right at all. I know someone that works at a store in Meadowbrook Mall. He was told to get in to open the store, or he would not have a job. That is so wrong.

We have all this snow, most of the major roads in marion county are closed, and we are under a state of emergency and yet we are still expected to go out to work. i work in a restaurant in marion county and when i called in to tell them that i could not make it in act like they was shocked. then i have friends that also manage other restaurants in the county and when i talked to them they was told to get in and get open that the storm is almost over. i think that when there is a stat of emergency that any place that is open and not open 24 hours should be fined and not the people that are forced to travel or get fired.

Can someone provide an updated list of the roads that are still closed in Morgantown? Any speculation as to when they might be reopened? Thanks.

I think they need to make business that are not essential to health and well being, such as Meadowbrook Mall close down! With the mall being open, it makes for un needed traffic on the roads. STATE OF EMERGENCY FOLKS---STAY OFF THE ROADS. Morgantown Mall and Middletown Mall are both closed, why can't Meadowbrook Mall close? Employess that work in some of the stores in the mall have to go to work or risk losing their jobs just because the mall itself won't close down. If the mall is open, all the stores are supposed to be open too, and the owners of some of these stores are so money hungry that they don't care about the safety of it's employees-they are making them go to work or not have a job. The news is saying "stay indoors and don't travel", but these store owners are saying " go to work, or don't have a job".
